The Mile High City sits at the edge of the Rockies and one would think that easily accessible skiing opportunities abound. However, many of the best known ski resorts are some hours outside of Denver. However, all is not lost – for those who want to get onto the powder and still be within striking distance of Denver’s increasingly vibrant entertainment scene there are a number of great ski destinations close to Colorado’s most populous city.
Here are some of the best ski (and related winter sports) destinations within easy striking distance of downtown Denver.
1. Echo Mountain.
Within an leisurely hours drive of Denver this resort offers exceptional value for money and is the perfect winter’s day out for the entire family. The facilities have undergone recent renovation and the resort is under new management – who seem set on cementing its place as a premier skiing destination. The drop is never going to be huge the elevation change from top to bottom is only around 600 feet – but its perfect for novices and that family excursion. There’s only the single triple chair lift, but this is a place for fun – not for those with serious ambitions to dominate the slopes.
2. The Loveland Ski resort.
This is another great value for money resort. Currently it’s not going to rival its larger cousins for an award about facilities – but it is cheap and cheerful in the best senses of the words. You’ll be bale to get that great cup of cocoa, as well as snacks at the simple base camp – and friendly locals make the experience even more attractive. For those who arrive late in the season the high elevation of the resort is a draw card – snow stays fresher for longer at that elevation. At 55 miles from Denver it is still well within the day trip category. Be aware that amenities such as restaurant destinations are in short supply – so prepare yourself accordingly.
3. Eldora Mountain.
Just over an hour from Denver this is a resort that has a lot to offer. It has 11 ski lifts which provide access to a wide variety of powder based experiences. There is something here for everyone – including those who are looking for an adrenaline filled double black slope to test their abilities. On the flip side of the coin the Green slopes gently encourage the beginner to explore skiing as a lifestyle choice.
It is not difficult to use Denver as a home base while exploring the opportunities for snow based fun in the immediate surrounds. Take some time off – wrap up warm and go on a winter exploration adventure next time you are in the area.
